Herbst

Die grau Jahreszeit ist da. Wenig Sonne, viel Wolken/Nebel und Regen (wenn auch nicht viel). Wenig Leute sind jetzt unterwegs. Im Sommer ist hier sonst viel mehr los! Jetzt aber ist das Strandbad verwaist. Mir kommt ein Berner Chanson in den Sinn wo folgender Text auftaucht: "Nüt als ä Sandschtrand grau und lär; wo si die Mönsche äch häre cho? Wo Chindergschrei u Pedalo?" - Wie der Titel von diesem Chanson lautet und wer es komponiert hat konnte ich (Trotz KI) bis heute nicht rausfinden. Um entsprechende Infos bin ich dankbar.

The grey season is upon us. Little sun, lots of clouds and mist, and rain (albeit not much). There aren’t many people about at the moment. It’s usually much busier here in summer! But now the lido is deserted. A Bernese chanson comes to mind, featuring the following lyrics: “Nothing but a grey, empty sandy beach; where have all the people gone? Where are the children’s shouts and the pedalos?” – Despite using AI, I’ve still not managed to find out what the title of this chanson is or who composed it. I’d be grateful for any relevant information.

Hagneck

Im Jahr 1900 wurde das Kraftwerk Hagneck an der Mündung des Hagneckkanals in den Bielersee in Betrieb genommen. Der Hagneckkanal entstand im Rahmen der ersten Juragewässerkorrektion. Die Wasserkraft wurde vorerst nicht genutzt. Doch bald kam die Idee auf, diese zu nutzen. Der Bau des ersten Flusskraftwerks wurde in Angriff genommen. Es wurde im Jahr 1900 in Betrieb genommen. Das Laufwasserkraftwerk befindet sich an der Mündung des Hagneckkanals in den Bielersee. Die alte historische Anlage wurde 2015 durch eine moderne Zentrale ergänzt. Berücksichtigt werden mussten Aspekte des Hochwasserschutzes aber auch ökologische Aspekte berücksichtigt werden. Für die Architektur zeichnete das Architekturbüro Penzel Valier und die Landschaftsarchitektur die Firma RaymondVogel Landschaften AG verantwortlich.

Ein Besuch der Anlage ist empfehlenswert. Im Besucherzentrum können Führungen gebucht werden.

Das alte Kraftwerk / The old powerstation

In 1900, the Hagneck Power Plant began operations at the mouth of the Hagneck Canal where it flows into Lake Biel. The Hagneck Canal was constructed as part of the first Jura River Regulation Project. Initially, the available hydropower was not utilized. However, the idea of generating electricity from it soon emerged, and construction of the first river-based power plant began. It began operations in 1900. The run-of-river power plant is located at the mouth of the Hagneck Canal where it flows into Lake Biel. The old historic facility was supplemented by a modern power plant in 2015. Flood control measures as well as ecological considerations had to be taken into account. The architectural firm Penzel Valier was responsible for the architecture, and Raymond VogelLandschaften AG handled the landscape architecture.

A visit to the facility is highly recommended. Guided tours can be booked at the visitorcenter.

Kiss & Ride

Park and Ride - ist sicher den meisten bekannt. Man trifft bei stark frqeuentierten Bahnhöfen Schilder und Parkplätze an, wo der Automobilist sein Fahrzeug abstellen kann um auf die Eisenbahn umzusteigen.

Kiss and Ride ist für mich eher neu. Ich habe dieses Schild erst kürzlich hier in Thun angetroffen. Dieser Lösungsansatz braucht offenbar weniger Parkplatz und das Auto kann weiterverwendet werden.

Park and Ride—most people are probably familiar with it. At busy train stations, you’ll see signs and parking lots where drivers can park their cars to transfer to the train.

Kiss and Ride is relatively new to me. I only recently came across this sign here in Thun. This approach apparently requires fewer parking spaces, and the car can still be used.

Prima inter pares

Vom Thuner Wasserzauber habe in einem vorherigen Beitrag etwas erzählt. Nun, dieser Anlass hat bereits begonnen und ist meiner Meinung nach, ein voller Erfolg. Hauptrolle spielt in einer der beiden Vorführungen das Dampfschiff Blümlisalp aus dem Jahr 1906 Ein wunderschönes Schiff dessen Überleben während langen Jahren an einem seidenen Faden hängig. Heute ist diese altehrwürdige Dame auf der Liste der Kulturgüter in Thun aufgeführt. Hoffentlich verhindert diese Liste das in den 70er und 80er Jahren drohende Ende.

Im Rahmen der Vorführung lernt man die Schönheiten des Thunersees kennen. Dieser See ist mir sehr stark ans Herz gewachsen. Darum ist, aus meiner Sicht, neben der DS Blümlisalp als Prima inter pares der Thunersee der Primus inter pares.

Als Berner Oberländer empfehle ich Euch allen: «chömet cho luege» - Kommt vorbei und seht es euch an.

I mentioned the Thun Watershow in a previous post. Well, the event has already begun and, in my opinion, is a resounding success. The star of one of the two shows is the steamship Blümlisalp, built in 1906 – a beautiful vessel whose survival hung by a thread for many years. Today, this venerable lady is listed as a cultural asset in Thun. Hopefully, this listing will prevent the fate that threatened her in the 1970s and 1980s.

During the show, you get to discover the beauty of Lake Thun. This lake has really grown on me. That’s why, in my view, alongside the DS Blümlisalp as ‘prima inter pares’, Lake Thun is the ‘primus inter pares’.

As a native of the Bernese Oberland, I recommend to you all: ‘chömet cho luege’ – just come along and have a look.

Selbst geerntet / Picked by ourselves

Trotz Hitze und Trockenheit, gibt es Äpfel. Auch wenn in diesem Jahr die Ernte etwas spärlicher ausfällt. Dessen ungeachtet, freuen  wir uns auf unsere eignen, selbst geernteten Äpfel.

Despite the heat and drought, there are apples. Even if this year’s harvest is a little smaller than usual. Nevertheless, we’re looking forward to our own apples, which we’ve picked ourselves.

Thuner Wasserzauber

Der Thuner Wasserzauber findet vom 25. September bis 25. Oktober 2026 täglich (bei jeder Witterung) statt. Die Veranstaltung ist für alle Besucherinnen und Besucher kostenlos zugänglich. Die erste Show fand im Jahr 2022 statt. Der Erfolgt war/ist so gross, dass vergleichbare Shows auch in Zug und Genf durchgeführt werden.

The “Thuner Wasserzauber» show takes place daily (regardless of the weather) from 25 September to 25 October 2026. The event is free for all visitors. The first show took place in 2022. It has been so successful that similar shows are also being held in Zug and Geneva.

80 years ago...

Vor 80 Jahren, genau am 18.September 1946 hielt Winston Churchill in Zürich seine berühmte Europa Rede. Er sprach damals über seine Vision für eine friedliches Europa und schloss mit den Worten: «Let Europe Arise!»  Aus meiner persönlichen Sicht eine bemerkenswerte/interessante Rede zu einem interessanten Thema, welches aus meiner Sicht immer noch aktuell ist.

 

Eighty years ago, on 18 September 1946 to be precise, Winston Churchill gave his famous ‘Europe’ speech in Zurich. He spoke at the time about his vision for a peaceful Europe and concluded with the words: ‘Let Europe Arise!’ In my personal view, it was a remarkable and interesting speech on an interesting topic, which I believe is still relevant today.
