Fulehung , der Zapfenstreich / the tap dance

 Der Zapfenstreich oft auch als Retraite genannt, war ein Signal zur Nachtruhe für die Truppen. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt durften sich die Soldaten nicht mehr ausserhalb ihrer Quartiere bewegen. So steht es geschrieben und so mag es wohl auch gewesen sein (zumindest früher).

Heute hat der Zapfenstreich unterschiedliche Bedeutungen. Während in Deutschland "der grosse Zapfenstreich" ein Anlass für die Ehrung von Persönlichkeiten oder zu besonderen Anlässen durchgeführt wird, ist der Zapfenstreich einer der Höhepunkte am Thuner Ausschiesset. Nach dem Konzert auf dem Rathausplatz zieht die Kadettenmusik und die Tambouren durch die Stadt Thun. Der offizielle Teil des Tages ist nun vorbei. Der inoffizielle feuchtfröhliche Teil geht weiter.

The taps strike, often also known as the Retraite, was a signal for the troops to retire for the night. From this moment on, the soldiers were no longer allowed to move outside their quarters. That's how it's written and that's probably how it was (at least in the past).

Today, the military taps have different meanings. While in Germany ‘der grosse Zapfenstreich’ is an event held to honour personalities or on special occasions, the ‘Zapfenstreich’ is one of the highlights of the Thun Ausiesset. After the concert on the town hall square, the cadet music and drummers parade through the town of Thun. The official part of the day is now over. The unofficial festive part continues.

So, nun ist es so weit. Das grosse Volksfest beginnt mit dem Eröffnungsumzug.  Mittels einer Kanone wird um 12 Uhr 30 ein Böller  gezündet. Erst wenn der Böller verhallt ist, beginnt der Umzug. Mit dem ganzen Kadettencorps.

So, the time has come. The big festival begins with the opening parade.  A cannon is used to set off a firecracker at 12.30 pm. The procession only begins when the firecracker has died away. With the entire cadet corps.

 Der Ausschiesset hier in Thun auch "Fulehung" genannt. beginnt morgen Sonntag, dem 22.09.24 und endet (offiziell) am Dienstag dem 24.09.24  mit dem Gessler Schiessen und dem Schlussumzug. 

Ob schon es nur noch wenige Stunden dauert bis das Fest beginnt, sieht man noch nicht sehr viel von den anstehenden Festivitäten. Es sei den, man weiss wo man hinschauen muss soll. Kunststück, vor 50 Jahren war ich als aktiver Kadett ebenfalls dabei.

The Ausschiesset here in Thun, also known as ‘Fulehung’, begins tomorrow, Sunday 22.09.24 and ends (officially) on Tuesday 24.09.24 with the Gessler Schiessen and the final parade. 

Although it's only a few hours until the festival begins, you can't see much of the upcoming festivities yet. Unless you know where to look. Trick, 50 years ago I was also there as an active cadet. 

Herbst / Autum

Trotz fortgeschrittener Jahreszeit tragen Bäume und Büsche noch Blätter. Doch deren Zeit läuft langsam  aber sicher ab.

Despite the advanced season, trees and bushes still have leaves. But their time is slowly but surely running out.

Schilthornbahn 20XX

Im April von diesem Jahr habe ich den Neubau der Schilthornbahn als Skifahrer beobachten können. Schon damals war ich vom Projekt tief beeindruckt. Anfangs September von diesem Jahr hatte ich die Gelegenheit die Baustelle zu besichtigen. Somit erhielt ich Einblick wie Gebäude und Bahninfrastruktur erstellt und in Betrieb genommen wird. Kurz gesagt beeindruckend.

Während der ganzen Bauphase ist ein Bahnbetrieb für Touristen und Einheimische gewährleistet. Einzig zwischen Q4/2024 und Q1/2025 ist der offizielle Betrieb der Sektion Birg – Schilthorn eingestellt.

In April of this year, I was able to observe the construction of the new Schilthorn cablecar as a skier. Even then, I was deeply impressed by the project. At the beginning of September this year, I had the opportunity to visit the project site. This gave me an insight into how buildings and railway infrastructure are constructed and put into operation. In short, it was impressive.

During the entire construction phase, railway operations are guaranteed for tourists and locals. Official operation of the Birg - Schilthorn section will only be interrupted between Q4/2024 and Q1/2025.

En avril de cette année, j'ai pu suivre la construction du nouveau téléphérique du Schilthorn en tant que skieur. Déjà à l'époque, j'avais été profondément impressionné par le projet. Au début du mois de septembre de cette année, j'ai eu l'occasion de visiter le chantier. J'ai ainsi pu voir comment les bâtiments et l'infrastructure du téléphérique sont construits et mis en service. En bref, c'était impressionnant.

Pendant toute la phase de construction, le service ferroviaire est assuré pour les touristes et les habitants. Seule l'exploitation officielle de la section Birg - Schilthorn sera suspendue entre le T4/2024 et le T1/2025.

Das Monster / The Monster

 Sind ein oder mehrere Wehre der Mühleschleuse in Thun geöffnet, so entsteht eine grosse Welle (genannt das Monster), die von den Flusssurfern geschätzt wird. Diese zu befahren/beherrschen ist nicht ganz trivial, weisst sie doch offenbar diverse Tücken auf. Genauere Angaben dazu kann dem Internetauftritt des Vereins Flusssurfen Thun entnommen werden.

Die Schleusen bzw. die Wehre werden heute zentral von Bern aus reguliert. Mit dem Ziel, die Pegelstände der grossen Seen entlang der Aare zu regulieren. Ein nicht ganz triviales Unterfangen, das den zuständigen Stellen oft Kopfzerbrechen bereitet.

Somit ist eine Prognose wann und wie diese grosse Welle vorkommt nicht gerade einfach. Am besten man prüft die vor Ort.

 

When one or more locks of the Mühleschleuse in Thun are open, a large wave (known as the Monster) is created, which is much appreciated by river surfers. Navigating/controlling this wave is not entirely trivial, as it obviously has various pitfalls. More detailed information can be found on the website of the Flusssurfen Thun association.

The locks and weirs are now regulated centrally from Bern. The aim is to regulate the water levels of the large lakes along the Aare. This is not a trivial endeavour that often causes headaches for the responsible authorities.

It is therefore not easy to predict when and how this large wave will occur. It is best to check this on site.
