Wir befinden uns im Jahre 2025 n.Chr. die ganze Welt fotografiert digital. Es gibt (nahezu) keine Firmen/Dienstleister mehr, die Filme nach dem C-41 Prozess entwickeln. Zu weilen findet man in den Städten noch Relikte wie diese Briefkästen für den Einwurf von Kodak Filmen. Es sieht so aus, also ob eine Aera zu Ende geht.

Wirklich? Nein! Ein von unbeugsamen Gallierinnen betriebenes Unternehmen in Berna Helvetiorum hört nicht auf, der digitalen Bildgenerierung Widerstand zu leisten. Mittels einem «Zaubertrank» (Scrutarum) überlisten sie den digital Bildprozess und können so den perceptio tactilis des Films beibehalten.

 

We are in the year 2025 A.D. The whole world is photographing digitally. There are (almost) no more companies/service providers that develop film using the C-41 process. Sometimes you can still find relics in the cities like these letterboxes for dropping off Kodak films. It looks like an era is coming to an end.

Really? No. A company run by indomitable women Gauls in Berna Helvetiorum will not stop resisting digital image generation. Using a ‘magic potion’ (Scrutarum), they outwit the digital image process and are thus able to maintain the perceptio tactilis of the film.

Nous sommes en 2025 après J.-C. Le monde entier photographie en mode numérique. Il n'y a (presque) plus d'entreprises/de prestataires de services qui développent des films selon le processus C-41. Parfois, on trouve encore des reliques dans les villes, comme ces boîtes aux lettres où l'on déposait les films Kodak. Il semble qu'une ère se termine.

 

Vraiment ? Non ! une entreprise gérée par d'irréductibles Gauloises à Berna Helvetiorum ne cesse de résister à la génération d'images numériques. Au moyen d'une « potion magique » (Scrutarum), elles déjouent le processus d'imagerie numérique et peuvent ainsi conserver la perceptio tactilis du film.

Stieleiche/ Pedunculate oak - (Quercus Robur)

Kürzlich beim Rasenmähen, fiel mir unter dem Boskoop Apfelbaum eine Blattform auf, die meiner Meinung nach definitiv nicht zu einem Apfelbaum gehört.  Die Form des Blattes könnte der einer Eiche entsprechen. Handelt es sich hier um einen Keimling? Die besagte Stelle wurde beim Mähen ab sofort umgangen. Nachdem der restliche Rasen (definitive kein englischer Rasen oder Rasen für den Fussball) gemäht war, widmete ich mich dem potentiellen Keimling. Ich entschied mich, diesen Keimling in einen Topf umzupflanzen um weiter zu beobachten und falls der Keimling dies überlebt, ihn auf zu ziehen. Beim Umtopfen befreite ich das dem Keimling anhaftende Erdreich von Gras- und Unkrautwurzeln. Dabei fand ich auch die «Ursache» des Keimlings: Eine Eichel! Diese wurde wohl von einem Vogel oder einem Eichhörnchen hier fallengelassen. Der Verdacht liegt nahe, dass der Vogel oder das Eichhörnchen das in der Winterzeit im Boskoop Baum aufgehängte Futterhäuschen aufsuchten und als «Entgelt» für die Verpflegung die Eichel hier liegen liess. In der Zwischenzeit könnte ich mit der «Pl@net» App ermitteln, dass es sich um eine Stiel-Eiche oft auch Deutsche Eiche handelt. Sie kommt in der Gegend oft vor. Ein eindrucksvoller Baum, der gross und alt werden kann. Wie zum Beispiel die Bettler Eiche im Gwatt, die auf ein Alter von 600 bis 700 Jahr geschätzt wird. Dieser Keimling benötigt als noch etwas Zeit. Geben wir ihm diese Chance/Zeit.

Und hier die "Ursache": Eine Eichel! / And here's the "cause": An acorn!

Recently while mowing the lawn, I noticed a leaf shape under the Boskoop apple tree that, in my opinion, definitely does not belong to an apple tree. The leaf shape could be that of an oak tree. Is this a seedling? I immediately avoided that spot when mowing. After the rest of the lawn (definitely not an English lawn or a football pitch) was mowed, I turned my attention to the potential seedling. I decided to transplant this seedling into a pot to continue monitoring and, if the seedling survives, to grow it. While repotting, I removed any grass and weed roots from the soil adhering to the seedling. I also found the “cause” of the seedling: an acorn! This was probably dropped here by a bird or a squirrel. The suspicion is that the bird or squirrel visited the bird feeder hung in the Boskoop tree during the winter and left the acorn there as "payment" for the food. In the meantime, I was able to use the "Pl@net" app to determine that it is a pedunculate oak, often also called a German oak. They are common in the area. An impressive tree that can grow large and old. For example, the Beggar's Oak in Gwatt, which is estimated to be 600 to 700 years old. This seedling needs some more time. Let's give it this chance/time.

Ausgeflogen/flown out/retiré

 Seit dem Blog Eintrag vom 10. Juni ist einige Zeitverstrichen und ich bin zurück aus meinen Ferien. Zuhause angekommen, ist mir aufgefallen, dass die abnehmbare Front des Nistkastens nicht mehr da war und auf dem Boden des Gartens lag. Waren da Nachtbuben oder Nesträuber am Werk? Das sorgsam aufgebaute Vogelnest des Meisen Paares war leer. Spuren von Nachtbuben oder einem Nesträuber waren nicht zu finden. So blieb uns nichts anderes übrig als den Brutkasten für eine weitere Nutzung wieder zusammenzubauen. Da heute starke, böige Winde wehten, zeigte sich des Rätsel Lösung recht schnell. Die starken Böen führen dazu, dass der Brutkasten arg durchgeschüttelt wurde. Ein gut möglicher Grund, dass die Front des Nistkastens rausgefallen ist. Dies passierte offenbar, nachdem die Jungvögel ausgeflogen waren.

Some time has passed since the blog entry of 10 June and I have returned from my holidays. When I got home, I noticed that the removable front of the nesting box was no longer there and was lying on the floor of the garden. Were there nocturnal birds or nest robbers at work? The carefully constructed bird's nest of the titmouse pair was empty. There were no traces of nocturnal predators or nest robbers to be found. So we had no choice but to reassemble the incubator for further use. As strong, gusty winds were blowing today, the solution to the puzzle quickly became apparent. The strong gusts meant that the incubator was badly shaken. One possible reason is that the front of the nest box fell out. This apparently happened after the young birds had fledged.

Depuis le message du 10 juin sur le blog, il s'est passé un certain temps et je suis rentré de vacances. De retour à la maison, j'ai remarqué que la façade détachable du nichoir n'était plus là et gisait sur le sol du jardin. Est-ce que des coquins ou des voleurs de nids étaient à l'œuvre ? Le nid soigneusement construit par le couple de mésanges était vide. Il n'y avait pas de traces de coquins ou de voleurs de nids. Il ne nous restait donc plus qu'à remonter la couveuse pour une autre utilisation. Comme il y avait de fortes rafales de vent aujourd'hui, la solution de l'énigme est apparue assez rapidement. Les fortes rafales de vent ont fortement secoué l'incubateur. C'est peut-être la raison pour laquelle l'avant du nichoir s'est détaché. Cela s'est apparemment produit après l'envol des oisillons.

The same procedure as every year?

Über das verlängerte Wochenende von Auffahrt findet in Münsingen auf dem Schlossgut Areal die Photo Ausstellung «Photo Münsingen» statt. Dies bereits zum 24. Mal. Das sagt doch schon einiges über diesen Anlass aus. Der zur Ausstellung ist frei. Gezeigt werden Wettbewerbe zwischen Fotoclubs, Bilder von Fotografen und Fotografinnen aus verschiedenen Themenbereichen aber auch Vorträge und Workshop zu fotografischen Themen. Also ein vielfältiges Programm für den Besucher dieser Ausstellung.

Selten trift man ein so durchmischtes Publikum an. Dieser Umstand mag sicher auf dem kostenlosen Eintritt, dem vielfältigen Angebot, aber auch dem Areal basieren. Nicht ganz unwichtig ist aber auch der Zeitraum, nämlich das Auffahrt Wochenende. Erreichbar ist die Ausstellung zu Fuss, mit dem Velo, dem öffentlichen Verkehr (Bahn, Bus) aber auch mit dem Auto.

Ich besuche diese Ausstellung schon seit mehr als 10 Jahren. Die Themen die mich interessieren sind von Jahr zu Jahr verschieden. In diesem Jahr sind mir die Bilder von folgenden Fotografen und Fotografinnen aufgefallen:

• Andreas Busslinger (VERTIKALE SICHT) - Seine Bilder erinnern mich an Georg Gerster, der damals für die Swissair geniale Bilder aus dem Helikopter und langsam fliegenden Flugzeugen aus machte. Andreas Busslinge macht heute ähnliche Bilder mittels einer Drohne und findet Sujets/Objekte hier in der Schweiz.
• Patrick Lambertz (CHALETS OF SWITZERLAND) – Mit dem Ausdruck «Chalet» wird oft eine idyllische Alphütte in den Bergen verstanden. Doch der Begriff Chalet ist vielfältiger und geht leider oft vergessen. Der Fotograf zeigt hier verschiedene Häuser in verschneitem Gelände aus ländlichen Regionen der Schweiz. Die sorgfältig ausbelichteten Bilder werden perfekt präsentiert. Passpartout und Rahmen gehören zum Bild.
• U25 Photo Challenge (Thema «Leidenschaft») - Junge Fotografen und Fotografinnen haben hier ihre Arbeiten zum Thema eingereicht. Kurz gesagt: Witzig, spannend und amüsant.
• Grit Meyer (Line(e)scapes) – Architekturfotografie reduziert auf das Wesentliche. Da gibt es nicht viel zu sagen: Chapeau!

Fazit zu der diesjährigen Ausstellung:

• Die in den Wettbewerben bestplatzierten Fotografen und Fotografinnen sind nicht immer die bestplatzierten in meiner Rangliste. Die Meinungen sind (Gott sei Dank) verscheiden.
• Die Präsentation des Bildes hört nicht mit dem fertigen Bild auf, dazu gehört auch das Passepartout, der Rahmen und die Wand bzw. der Raum.
• Software basierte Bildbearbeitung ist praktisch und hilfreich. Oft wird aber auch übertrieben.
• Und schlussendlich: Schwarz-Weiss Fotografie ist (immer noch) noch aktuell.

Gut zu wissen: Photo Münsingen 2026 findet vom 14. bis 17. Mai 2026 (zum 25. Mal).

Over the long weekend of Ascension Day, the photo exhibition ‘Photo Münsingen’ takes place in Münsingen on the Schlossgut grounds. This is already the 24th time. That says a lot about this event. Admission to the exhibition is free. On display will be competitions between photo clubs, pictures by photographers from various subject areas as well as lectures and workshops on photographic topics. In other words, a varied programme for visitors to this exhibition.

It is rare to encounter such a mixed audience. This may well be due to the free admission, the diverse programme and the location. However, the time period, namely the Ascension weekend, is also not entirely unimportant. The exhibition can be reached on foot, by bike, by public transport (train, bus) and also by car.

I have been visiting this exhibition for more than 10 years. The themes that interest me vary from year to year. This year, the pictures by the following photographers caught my eye:

• AndreasBusslinger (VERTIKALE SICHT) - His pictures remember me of Georg Gerster, who used to take brilliant pictures from helicopters and slow-flying aeroplanes for Swissair. Andreas Busslinge takes similar pictures today using a drone and finds subjects/objects here in Switzerland.
• PatrickLambertz (CHALETS OF SWITZERLAND) - The term ‘chalet’ is often used to describe an idyllic alpine hut in the mountains. However, the term chalet is more diverse and is unfortunately often forgotten. Here, the photographer shows various houses in snow-covered terrain from rural regions of Switzerland. The carefully exposed images are perfectly presented. Passpartout and frame are part of the picture.
• U25 PhotoChallenge (theme ‘Passion’) - Young photographers have submitted their work on this theme. In short: funny, exciting and amusing.
• Grit Meyer (Line(e)scapes) - Architectural photography reduced to the essentials. There's not much to say: Chapeau!

Conclusion on this year's exhibition:

• The best-placed photographers in the competitions are not always the best-placed in my ranking list. Opinions differ (thank God).
• The presentation of the image does not end with the finished picture, it also includes the passe-partout, the frame and the wall or room.
• Software-based image processing is practical and helpful. However, it is often overdone.
• And finally: black and white photography is (still) relevant.

Good to know: Photo Münsingen 2026 will take place from 14 to 17 May 2026 (for the 25th time).

Nachwuchs / New offspring

Familie Kohlmeise hat Nachwuchs

Bereits zum zweiten Mal in diesem Jahr zieht ein Kohlmeisen Pärchen ihren Nachwuchs in diesem Vogelhaus aus. Offenbar ist dies nicht ungewöhnlich, gemäss der Schweizerischen Vogelwarte sind pro Paar 1 bis 2 Jahresbruten möglich.

Die Jungen sind bereits geschlüpft und nun müssen diese gefüttert werden. Da gibt es für die Eltern in den kommenden Tagen einiges zu tun.

For the second time this year, a pair of great tits are raising their offspring in this birdhouse. Apparently this is not unusual, according to the Swiss Ornithological Institute, 1 to 2 broods per year are possible per pair.

The young have already hatched and now need to be fed. There's a lot for the parents to do in the coming days.

La famille de mésanges charbonnières a des petits

C'est la deuxième fois cette année qu'un couple de mésanges charbonnières élève sa progéniture dans cette volière. Apparemment, ce n'est pas inhabituel, selon la Station ornithologique suisse, 1 à 2 nichées annuelles sont possibles par couple.

Les jeunes sont déjà éclos et doivent maintenant être nourris. Il y a donc du travail pour les parents dans les jours à venir.

Filmfehler / Film defect

Oft wird der ah! Effekt bei der ersten Betrachtung eines fertig entwickelten (fixierten und gewässerten) Films als tolle Erlebnis beschrieben. Dass es auch einen oh weh, ach du Sch… Effekt gibt, wird nicht oder nur selten erwähnt. Das ist genau dann der Fall, wenn beim Entwickeln des Films irgend Etwas schiefgelaufen ist. In meinen Fall stellte ich den Fehler erst beim Scannen des entwickelten Schwarz-Weiss Filmes fest, dass der ganze Film mit dunkeln Punkten bzw. Blasen übersät ist. Das Negativ ist somit unbrauchbar.  Dies war meine erste Meinung zu diesem Unglück:

• Alle Aufnahmen sind futsch
• Die Situation wo ich die Fotos gemacht habe tritt nie wieder ein

Andererseits, müssen die Aufnahmen perfekt sein? Es gibt Fotos aus meiner Kindheit die mit einfachen Kameras gemacht wurden, und deren Qualität den heutigen Massstäben keinesfalls mehr entsprechen. Und doch sind diese wichtig für mich. Also doch, ich behalte diese fehlerhaften Negative und schlussendlich habe ich sie auch eingescannt.

Es handelt sich hier um Aufnahmen aus dem Spätherbst 2024. Fotografiert mit einer Yashica Mat 124g, einer zwei äugigen Spiegelreflex Kamera. Die Kamera funktioniert immer noch gut. Der einzige Nachteil ist der, dass die meisten Passanten mich (aus Unkenntnis) schief anschauen, wenn ich mit einer solchen Kamera fotografiere.

Beim Film handelt es sich um einen Ilford FP4plus, den mit meiner «Standard Chemie» (Ilford LC-29, Ilford Rapid Fixer, Ilford Ilfostop) entwickelt habe. An der Chemie kann es also nicht liegen (Tests mit anderen Filmen haben diese Überlegung auch bestätigt). Mein Verdacht liegt beim Film den ich via Internet von einer Privatperson erworben habe.  Der Verdacht bestätigte sich bei einem weiteren Test mit einem weiteren Film aus diesem Kauf.

The "ah!" effect upon first viewing a fully developed (fixed and watered) film is often described as a wonderful experience. The fact that there is also an "oh dear, oh my gosh..." effect is rarely mentioned. This is precisely the case when something went wrong during the film development process. In my case, I only discovered the error when scanning the developed black and white film, which showed that the entire film was covered with dark spots or bubbles. The negative is therefore unusable. This was my initial assessment of this misfortune:

• All the shots are ruined
• The situation in which I took the photos will never occur again

On the other hand, do the shots have to be perfect? ​​There are photos from my childhood that were taken with simple cameras, and their quality no longer meets today's standards. And yet, they are important to me. So yes, I keep these flawed negatives and finally scanned them. These are photos from late autumn 2024. They were taken with a Yashica Mat 124g, a twin-lens reflex camera. The camera still works well. The only drawback is that most passersby look at me askance (out of ignorance) when I take photos with such a camera. The film is Ilford FP4plus, which I developed with my "standard chemistry" (Ilford LC-29, Ilford Rapid Fixer, Ilford Ilfostop). So, it can't be the chemistry (tests with other films have confirmed this). My suspicion lies with the film, which I purchased online from a private individual. This suspicion was confirmed by a further test with another film from this purchase.

Andererseits nimmt es mich wunder, ob mit den Daten (sprich «Geschwafel») auf den sozialen Netzwerken Werken etwas Gescheites erzielt werden kann.

Altglas / Old glass

Der Einsatz von «alten» Objektiven an spiegellosen Kameras ist sehr interessant. In meinem Falle kombiniere ich Nikon und Konica Macro Objektive mit Sony Nex Kameras. Dazu verwende ich Objektiv Adapter der Firma Fotga.

Bei den Sony Nex Kameras (die mit einem APS-C Sensor ausgerüstet sind) resultiert daraus ein Crop Faktor von 1.5. Da die beiden Macro Objektive eine Brennweite von 55mm (bezogen auf das Film- bzw. Vollformat der Kameras) aufweisen, resultiert daraus ein Äquivalent (für das APS-C Format) von 82.5mm. Eine Interessante Brennweite für Nah- bzw. Macro Aufnahmen.

Das Scharfstellen mit solchen Objektiven erfolgt mittels «Fokus-Peaking». Fokus-Peaking basiert auf dem Prinzip, dass Bereiche mit der höchsten Schärfe auch einen hohen Kontrast ausweisen. Diese Bereiche werden auf dem Display von Kameras mit Live-View Modus angezeigt. Die scharfen Kontrastreichen Bereiche des zu fotografierenden Bildes werden mittels einer auffälligen Farbe angezeigt

Zum Fotografieren gehört, ehrlicherweise auch etwas Glück und der richtige Zeitpunkt. Da die ganze Ausrüstung (Kamera, Objektiv und Adapter) leicht und handlich ist, ist sie allzeit bereit für Aufnahmen im Garten.

N.B.: Beim Nikon Objektiv handelt es sich um ein Nikkor Micro 55mm f3.5. Es wurde zwischen 1977 und 1979 produziert. Damaliger Listenpreis in den war US$ 187.-. Für die damalige Zeit ein stolzer Preis!

 

Sumpf-Schwertlilie mit Insekten / Swamp iris with insects

The use of ‘old’ lenses on mirrorless cameras is very interesting. In my case, I combine Nikon and Konica Macro lenses with Sony Nex cameras. For this I use lensadapters from the company Fotga.

With the Sony Nex cameras (which are equipped with an APS-C sensor) this results in a crop factor of 1.5. As the two Macro lenses have a focal length of 55mm (in relation to the film or full format of the cameras), this results in an equivalent (for the APS-C format) of 82.5mm. An interesting focal length for close-up or macro shots.

Focusing with such lenses is done by means of ‘focus peaking’. Focus peaking is based on the principle that areas with the highest sharpness also show a high contrast. These areas are shown on the display of cameras with live view mode. The sharp, high-contrast areas of the image to be photographed are indicated by a striking colour

To be honest, photography also requires a bit of luck and the right timing. As the entire equipment (camera, lens and adapter) is light and handy, it is always ready for taking pictures in the garden.

N.B.: The Nikon lens is a Nikkor Micro 55mm f3.5, which was produced between 1977 and 1979. The list price at the time was US$ 187. A proud price for that time!

Milchbrüggli - Review

Im meinem Blog Eintrag vom 1. August 2024 erwähnte ich den notwendig anstehenden Neubau der Passerelle über die Frutigenstrasse in Thun. In der Zwischenzeit ist mehr als ein halbes Jahr vergangen und die neue Passerelle ist gebaut und im regen Gebrauch. Ich hoffe, dass sie ihren Dienst wieder über eine lange Zeit erbringt. Nachfolgend habe ich einige Bilder aufgeführt. Sie enthalten interessante Details die ich im Laufe der Bauzeit mit analogen Kameras fotografiert habe. Anmerkung: Ich bin kein Bauprofi, man möge mir meine Unwissenheit/Unkenntnis entschuldigen.

In my blog entry from 1 August 2024, I mentioned the need to build a new bridge over Frutigenstrasse in Thun. More than half a year has passed since then and the new footbridge has been built and is in heavy use. I hope that it will serve its purpose for a long time to come. I have included some pictures below. They contain interesting details that I photographed with analogue cameras during the construction period. Note: I am not a construction professional, so please excuse my ignorance/lack of knowledge.

Entre-temps, plus de six mois se sont écoulés et la nouvelle passerelle est construite et utilisée de manière intensive. J'espère qu'elle rendra à nouveau service pendant une longue période. J'ai inclus quelques photos ci-dessous. Elles contiennent des détails intéressants que j'ai photographiés avec des appareils analogiques au cours de la construction.
