Falls Sie diesen Ort
In this
country inn (Bären Sumiswald) there is a table with a literary background. This
is the so-called ‘spider table’ from Jeremias Gotthelf’s world-famous Novella
‘Die schwarze Spinne’ (The Black Spider). It is mentioned in Jeremias
Gotthelf’s Novella as follows
Once many
tears had been shed in the church and the churchyard, and many prayers had been
said, everyone from the whole valley who had come to the funeral – and all
those who were able-bodied had come – went to the inn for the customary
refreshments. And so it came to pass that, as was customary, the women and
children sat at a table of their own, whilst the entire adult men’s group were
seated at the famous ‘Scheibentisch’, which can still be seen today at the
‘Bären’ in Sumiswald. It has been preserved as a memento of a time when there
were once only two dozen men where now two thousand live, and as a reminder
that the lives of those two thousand, too, rest in the hands of the one who
saved those two dozen.
The
‘Spinnentisch’/‘Scheibentisch’ is located in the guest room of the Landgasthof
Bären in Sumiswald. To this day, guests at this highly recommended restaurant
still sit around this round table. If you visit this place, make sure you allow
plenty of time and book a seat at this legendary table. And if you have a
little more time to spare, do explore the associated themed trail known as the
‘Spinne Wäg’.
