Expired but not exhausted

Ein Schwarzweiss Film, mit dem Ablaufdatum 03/1985, gilt offiziell als abgelaufen bzw. als nicht mehr brauchbar. Im Internet gibt es zu diesem Thema diverse Meinungen, Anregungen und Tipps. Doch diese sind mit grösster Vorsicht zu geniessen. Folgende Abhängigkeiten/Einflüsse tauchen immer wieder auf:

• Die Art des Filmes (Schwarz Weiss-, Negativ- oder Diapositivfilm)
• Die Empfindlichkeit des Filmmaterials (sie soll mit dem Alter des Materials abnehmen, besonders sei dies bei hochempfindlichem Material der Fall)
• Der Hersteller des Filmmaterials
• Die Art wie das Filmmaterial gelagert wurde (gekühlt, ungekühlt oder sogar Temperaturschwankungen ausgesetzt)
• Die Verpackung des Films
• Das Alter des Filmmaterials (Wie lange liegt das Ablaufdatum zurück?)
• Die Konfektionierung der Filme

All diese Einflüsse machen eine verbindliche Aussage nahezu unmöglich. Ein empirischer Ansatz drängt sich hier auf. In meinem Falle liegt das Verfalldatum von diesem Film 40 Jahre zurück. Die Empfindlichkeit von 125 ISO war damals Standard. Der Film befand sich gut verpackt im Keller eines Gebäudes bei ausgeglichenen Temperaturen und nahezu gleicher Luftfeuchtigkeit. Der Film war verpackt in der Originalverpackung. 

Ich habe mich entschieden den Film wie ISO 25 zu belichten. Sehr wahrscheinlich hätte eine Belichtung wie ISO 64 funktioniert. 

Entwickelt habe ich den Film mit dem Entwickler LC-29 von Ilford (1+19, 5min 30sec, bei 20°C, pro Minute, 10sec kippen). Ja und dann war ich gespannt auf das Resultat. Kurz gesagt ich bin völlig überrascht, wie gut die Negative entwickelt wurden. Obwohl das Korn manchmal etwas gröber als bei den neuen Filmen. Zusammen mit den Foto Sujets passt aber der Film ausgezeichnet.

Fotografiert habe ich zwei Schulhäuser die mich während meiner Schulzeit begleitet haben:

• Schulhaus Pestalozzi (erbaut 1907 bis 1909, Gesamtrestaurierung 2010 bis 2013)
• Schulhaus Progymatte (erbaut 1928 bis 1930, Gesamtrestaurierung 1990 bis 1992)

A black and white film with the expiry date March 1985 is officially considered expired or no longer usable. 

There are various opinions, suggestions and tips on this subject on the Internet. However, these should be treated with the utmost caution. The following dependencies/influences keep cropping up:

• The type of film (black and white, negative or slide film)
• The sensitivity of the film material (it is said to decrease with the age of the material, especially with highly sensitive material)
• The manufacturer of the film material
• The way in which the film material was stored (cooled, uncooled or even exposed to temperature fluctuations)
• The packaging of the film
• The age of the film material (how long ago was the expiry date?)
• The packaging of the films

All these influences make it almost impossible to make a binding statement. An empirical approach is required here. In my case, the expiry date of this film was 40 years ago. The speed of 125 ISO was standard at the time. The film was well packaged in the cellar of a building at balanced temperatures and almost the same humidity. The film was packed in its original packaging. 

I decided to expose the film at ISO 25. It is very likely that an exposure of ISO 64 would have worked.

I developed the film with the developer LC-29 from Ilford (1+19, 5min 30sec, at 20°C, per minute, 10sec tilt). Yes, and then I was curious to see the result. In short, I am completely surprised at how well the negatives were developed. Although the grain is sometimes a little coarser than with the new films. Together with the photo subjects, however, the film fits perfectly.

I photographed two school buildings that accompanied me during my school days:

• Pestalozzi school building (built 1907 to 1909, complete restoration 2010 to 2013)
• Progymatte school building (built 1928 to 1930, complete restoration 1990 to 1992)

Endlich sind die Temperaturen gestiegen, so dass ich ohne grossen Aufwand meine belichteten Schwarzweiss Filme in der Waschküche entwickeln kann. Selbstverständlich können Filme auch bei tieferen Temperaturen entwickelt werden. Dazu gibt es ja Kurven womit die Entwicklungszeiten entsprechend verlängert werden können. Gute Resultate habe ich aber zwischen 18°C und 23°C erzielt. Ausserhalb dieser Grenzen hatte ich immer wieder Problem mit den Negativen. Also, habe ich mir Zeit genommen bzw. gewartet bis die Temperatur im Keller akzeptabel war. Mit der Folge dass ich nun Negative vom 1. Quartal 2016 habe. Hier einige wenige Bilder im „Centre Löwenberg“ in Muntelier, die mit meine Hasselblad 500 C/M Kamera gemacht habe. Die ersten Bilder wurden anfangs Februar gemacht (im Laufe des Nachmittags). Aus diesem Grund habe ich eine Kodak Tri-X Film verwendet. Diesen habe ich wie 400 ASA belichtet in Ilford LC-29 entwickelt. Also keine speziellen „Klimmzüge“.

Finally, the temperatures have risen, so that I can development b/W films in the laundry room. Of course, films can be processed at lower or higher temperatures. For this purpose there are curves which the development time can be extended accordingly. From my point of view I have only obtained good results between 18 °C and 23 °C. So I had to wait until the temperature in the laundry room is acceptable. With the result that I have now negatives from Q1 2016. Here are a few pictures in the "Centre Löwenberg" in Muntelier that I made with my Hasselblad 500 C/M camera. The first images were taken in early February (in the afternoon). For this reason, I used a Kodak Tri-X film and exposed it with 400 ISO/ASA.

Stairs...

Stairs get a different status after a knee surgery. They become obstacles! On the other hand, stairs have also certain aesthetic aspects. Such as these stairs within a building of the University of Bern.

I took this picture during the lunch break after an information event in the same building. And I have exposed only one negative, with full confidence in the integrated light meter my old Nikon EL2 camera.

The Best Camera Is The One That's With You

Winter is an unfavorable time for the amateur photographer. In the evening and in the morning it's often too dark for taking pictures. My workaround: Take the camera with you wherever you are. In the last few months I've taken this one with me:

It's an old Nikon EL2. Heavy, sturdy and easy to use. Here are some pictures I have taken last year in late autumn.

"Bundesplatz" / Government Plaza

The "Bundesplatz" is the Government Plaza in Bern (the capital city of Switzerland). There is also a waterspout fountain with 26 jets (they represent the 26 cantons and half-cantons of Switzerland). In summer, the fountain is turned on at certain times. For the pleasure of young and old. If you visit Bern, have a look at it. It's funny how people enjoy this fountain in front of the parliament building.
