22.5 °C / 35.2°C

It's hot, terribly hot here in Switzerland and in Europe. Temperatures far over 30°C are not that common. In such cases it's time to visit the "Schwäbis" open-air pool located at the Aare River. The River is quite warm; actually 22.5°C. And it's hot 35.2°C. So it's time to swim.

Hasselblad

In the past, Hasselblad was the (medium format) camera. For the amateur, a (nearly) impossible dream. Today the prices have dropped on the second-hand market in an area where such cameras and their elements (bodies, lenses and magazines) are affordable. Nevertheless, good, well-kept cameras come at a price. And that's a good thing. That man / woman with analog cameras take pictures different than with digital cameras is well known. It’s “even worse” with Hasselblad cameras. This is due to the following:

  • Mostly a waist-level viewfinder (with eyepiece) is used. Focusing via viewfinder is a bit strange, but also has advantages (inconspicuous trigger "from the hips")
  • Very often, a handheld exposure meter is used (except PME viewfinder with integrated light meter); due to that fact object measurement and light measurement is now possible.
  • The filter factors must be included.
  • The exposure or aperture / time combination is controlled via exposure values (EV)
  • With medium format cameras, the film is transported usually manually.
  • There are 12 exposures available for medium format; after that, the magazine or the film has to be changed.
  • Very often a tripod is used

Pretty restrictive? Probably not, I think more of kind of "slow down". It's just a different way of photography, influenced by the technology that is available. And as the saying goes: "The best camera out there, is the one that is with you".

Grimsel

The Grimsel Pass connects the Bernese Oberland with the Upper Valais. The road over the Grimselpass as we know it today was created in the mid of the last century. The panorama (1st picture) shows the Grimselsee and the Grimsel hospice.
Before there was also a road. However there were less tunnels and bridges (picture 2, 3, 4).
Parts of it are still visible and can be driven partially. It is noticeable that the old road is much narrower and often very confusing; a challenge for the motorists and the vehicle. At that time a mountain pass road was a real adventure

First cut is the deepest...

On this wall, graffiti change very often. Actually they are very colorful. Especially in the evening, when the sun shines directly onto the wall, the light emphasizes the colors of the graffiti. In Black an White, these graffiti remain also interesting.
For years I encouter in the whole Thun the sparyer with the cow ("Cows"). In the beginning these cows were sprayed in black an white color. Now you may encounter cows in diffetent colors. I don't know reason why, but it cannot be the price for the aerosol cans...

Now they are here, the images I made with two crutches and a Hasselblad camera. It‘s not an easy task, because a medium format camera just needs 2 hands. Where to place the crutches (Advantageously, a safe place to deposit, so they don’t fall to the ground)? Then take the camera out of the backpack. Selecting the frame, measure exposure and correct if necessary and expose. Sounds easy. Yes, if you stand on two healthy legs. With a healthy and a «repaired» leg, it’s a bit more difficult. But it seems to have worked. In order to get a digital image from an anlog film you may need some time. Sometimes quite a lot… For me, the great period of time came from the following circumstances:
  • Through my knee surgery, I was quite hindered in my mobility
  • In order to develop a black and white film it was too cold in the laundry room. I have simply no courage to develop a film at a room temperature of 14°C.
  • And finally, the developed film needs to be scanned and retouched. This needs additional time.
Result: More than a month of delay.
